Staff Tour of Phase 2 of the Hamilton-Walton Transformation

Project Architect Colin Dean led RBA staff on a recent tour of Phase 2 of the Hamilton-Walton Transformation at the University of Oregon. Two residential halls—Building B and Building C—are going in on the same site on Agate Street across from DeNorval Unthank Jr. Hall.

Building B will be a six-story building that includes academic spaces and residences for 705 students. Building C will be a five-story building that contains a mix of four-bedroom apartments and single-occupant “micro” efficiency units for 400 students.

On the exterior, the Fortis team is installing brick and metal siding. Each facade responds to other parts of campus—the use of brick reflects more of the traditional style found on campus while metal panels are a nod to modern structures, such as the new Hayward Field.

A unique feature of the brick mix is that Buildings B and C bridge the red mix found on LLC with the dark mix of Unthank Hall. There's a subtle color transition with Building B being slightly lighter than Unthank Hall and Building C being slightly lighter than Building B.

Staff were impressed by the views from the building, especially those to the south and east that look out onto Hayward Field and Unthank Hall’s outdoor space, respectively.

The University of Oregon is currently seeking naming suggestions for Building B and Building C. Students, faculty members, staff, and alumni are invited to submit name suggestions until 5p on February 23. The naming committee is especially interested in names that connect with a sense of inclusion, equity, justice, and belonging.

For more info, see the online nomination form.

Buildings B and C are on track to being LEED Gold. They will be ready for occupancy by July 2023.
