Flock13 Welcomes Students

There’s a familiar thrum in Eugene as college students come for the first time or return to town. It’s Week of Welcome at the University of Oregon and the first day of school at Lane Community College and Bushnell University.

In honor of all these students’ arrival, we’d like to spotlight a new student housing project: Flock13. On 13th Avenue, at the doorstep of the University of Oregon, Flock13, as its name suggests, embraces the “duck life” in its design.

Yellow accents are used both on the exterior metal façade and throughout the interior.

Ducks abound in the signage and graphics—we expect the rubber ducks in the second-floor social space to “fly” and move around the social spaces. Metaphors and puns are rampant: “landing gear,” “launch pads,” “birds of a feather,” and more.

Three eateries will be moving into the ground floor retail spaces in the coming months, one of which—Provisions—will have a direct connection to the residential lobby and offer fresh coffee and pastries to residents as they head to class and cocktails to their professors at the end of a long day of lecturing. The retail openings are anticipated by end of the year.

The project also involved an exterior refresh of The Duck Store. We worked alongside The Duck Store leadership team to modernize the façade and catapult the building into the 21st century, setting the organization up for success for the next 100 years of service to the University of Oregon. The façade refresh includes new paint and glulam entry portals, but is defined by an uplit, perforated metal panel screen that wraps the concrete frame and CMU infill building. It now stands in dialogue with Flock13 to create a cohesive, active street edge.
