LCC Building 16 Renovation

Eugene, OR

Built in 1967 with a major addition in 2000, the Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Building (Building 16) on the Lane Community College campus is undergoing a comprehensive renovation of its science facilities. The 89,000-sf building currently contains 15 general classrooms, 14 science laboratories, lab support spaces, offices, study spaces, and common areas. Of the 14 labs, ten labs are essentially original from 1967 and four are 23 years old. Focusing on the 40,000 sf of science-related spaces, this renovation presents an opportunity to transform an underperforming, aging facility and, at the same time, address the future of science pedagogy.

Our team is working creatively and strategically within the constraints of the existing infrastructure to reconfigure and modernize the existing teaching and laboratory spaces. In addition to improving student safety and instructional support, a major goal of the design is to place science on display. Many of the students will be enrolling in their first—and sometimes defining—courses in science at a college level in this building. By improving the connection between common spaces and laboratories, the team is exploring ways to make science visible, accessible, exciting, collaborative, and adaptable.

The renovation will also address a significant deferred maintenance backlog. HVAC, plumbing, electrical and telecom systems will be largely replaced and upgraded. Modest but strategic site improvements will improve safety and accessibility while also establishing wayfinding and campus connectivity. The overall project will target LEED Silver Certification to meet LCC’s sustainability goals.
