RBA Welcomes Justen Stiles
Rowell Brokaw welcomes designer Justen Stiles to the team!
Justen has a profound appreciation for design that is both aesthetically enduring and environmentally responsible. As a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), he looks for opportunities to increase energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and environmental stewardship in all designs. His experience includes multi-family housing, K-12 schools, and higher education facilities, as well as numerous single-family houses and targeted renovations.
After receiving a B.S. in Environmental Science and Sustainability and a B.A. in Art History from Drew University, Justen attained an M.Arch from the University of Oregon. While a graduate student, he specialized in Architectural Technology with a focus on Mass Timber design and sustainable construction methods.
A brief Q&A with Justen:
What is your favorite building in Eugene?
The Smeede Hotel is one of Eugene's oldest remaining buildings (built in 1884). It has so many unique and quirky details such as the extremely tall door leading to the wine shop and its Italianate façade.
Who is your favorite architect?
Shigeru Ban for his innovative use of sustainable materials and his expressive timber structural designs. Olson Kundig's work, especially Tom Kundig's, for his aesthetic approach as well as his integration of kinetic architecture within his projects.
If you weren't an architect, what profession/work might you have done instead?
Surfboard shaper or boat design/builder. I love the ocean and working with my hands!
