Something Old, Something New: Inside the Steam Plant
Designing for future use of the former EWEB steam plant on Eugene’s downtown riverfront is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. As we explore the possibilities and realities of adapting and redeveloping this historic building, we enjoy the unique privilege of access to its remarkable interior — most notable for its vault-like volume and collection of industrial artifacts that would make any steampunk fan swoon.
One of the greatest challenges in this design process has been finding a balance between the old and the new. There is no shortage of cool stuff inside the steam plant. Our goal is to preserve and compliment its extraordinary historic character with new elements that are authentic to this place and time. To achieve this, we start with an appreciation for what’s there now.
Here are a few of our favorite snapshots from inside. What stands out to you? What are your favorite parts?
