The Lucy
Eugene, Oregon
Located in the Santa Clara neighborhood, The Lucy creates a pocket neighborhood with a community center at its heart. As with all pocket neighborhoods, there is an emphasis on both community and privacy.
Three 3-story apartment buildings contain a total of 36 dwelling units, ranging from one- to three-bedroom apartments. At the center of each building is a secure single stair, with large landings that serve as an entry and access to a common area patio for the dwellings. The central placement of the stair and of plumbing (for kitchens and bathrooms) along one interior wall help to maximize constructability and daylight orientation. The living areas are located at the far corners of each unit to highlight corner views with extra large windows. Ground floor dwellings have attached covered garden porches that establish clear entries and private yet social space. The buildings are clad with prefinished metal panels with a high recycled material content. Metal paneling is a sustainable and extremely durable material.
The community building will contain a multi-purpose meeting room for tenants as well as offices for management staff. A nature/play area is at the center of the site and adjacent to the community building. It is designed with kids in mind and uses natural features for play areas. Ancillary facilities include a secure bicycle storage area and a trash enclosure. Stormwater will be treated and stored on-site within a new catchment basin.
