Sawyer Station
Springfield, Oregon
Sawyer Station is a 40-unit affordable housing development situated on Main Street in Springfield. The name pays homage to the region's timber industry, honoring the sawyers who once shaped logs into lumber. Developed by Cornerstone Community Housing, the project consists of three 3-story buildings offering a combination of one- and two-bedroom apartments. With its proximity to schools and public transportation, the site is ideally suited for families.
The three buildings work together to form a central, open courtyard. By orienting units toward an inner courtyard rather than the street, the development creates a quieter, private environment for residents. The central courtyard is designed as the community hub, featuring open spaces, seating areas, and a playground easily accessible by residents from all buildings. Parking to the north of the courtyard is supplemented by on-street parking.
Strategic setbacks reduce noise from the surrounding streets. At the street level, the southeast corner is activated by public-facing elements, including outdoor seating, a shared amenity room, and an office dedicated to resident services.
