Richardson Sports Headquarters Addition and Renovation

Springfield, Oregon

In 2019, Richardson Sports reached out to RBA with a need to expand its corporate headquarters to accommodate a growing workforce and meet demands for increased production. Goals for the expansion included more workspace and meeting rooms for sales and administrative staff, improvements to the existing headquarter facilities, and a new street frontage that would update the company’s presence on International Way.

The project includes a new, 2-story, 10,000 SF addition that compliments and enhances the existing open office space, expanding it toward the street and redefining the character of the building exterior. While the existing 1-story building was clad in off-white metal panels with a long stretch of horizontal windows across a curved façade, the new building is clad in deep gray metal panels that frame a vertical pattern of phenolic wood panels and glass along the southern, street-facing façade. The tall windows allow daylight deep into the space and frame views out that stretch from the ground to the sky; the second story offers new views onto the surrounding landscape and hills to the east. A deep overhang at the roof level and an exterior horizontal sunshade at the second-floor level protect the interior from direct sunlight during the warm months of the year.

In addition to open office space, the new building includes several individual offices, new restrooms, two conference rooms, and communal gathering spaces for sales and administrative staff. A spacious “central mixing zone,” furnished with flexible work tables and soft seating, unites the existing and new open offices, and invites employees to take a break, intermingle, and work in small groups. Overhead, a 60-foot-long lightwell brings ample light into the center of the building and balances daylight entering from perimeter windows. New interior finishes match those in the existing office to create a sense of continuity between the existing and new buildings, while updated office furniture, lighting fixtures, and collaborative work areas refresh and improve the overall interior work environment.

While celebrating the completion of the addition, Kelly Richardson thanked his staff for their patience during construction and said, “I think now we look like the company we want to be.”
