OSU Ship Operations Dock Renewal and Long Range Development Plan
Newport, Oregon
In anticipation of the arrival of three new research vessels for the U.S scientific fleet, Oregon State University is redesigning and expanding the Ship Operations Dock and support area at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. The new ships will join the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences’ existing fleet. The first of the new ships, the 199-feet-long R/V Taani, arrives and will become operational in 2023. In order to accommodate this larger fleet, the safe handling of heavy equipment, and security requirements, the original 1960s pier, as well as an extension built in the 1990s, must be modernized. The project also involves the creation of a Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) for the dock and the supporting facilities, which include buildings, parking, access roads, storage, offices, shops, and facilities for visitors.
Andersen Construction and Rowell Brokaw are leading this design-build project. Other key team members include Bergerson Construction, with their expertise in marine construction, and KPFF, with their civil and structural engineering complimented by marine engineers from their Special Project Division. This complex project also demands many technical experts, including Elcon for marine electrical engineering, Pacific Habitat Services for the regional marine permitting process, Wolf Water Resources for hydraulics and hydrology, and NIS for low voltage and security standards. Rowell Brokaw is very excited to be a part of this talented and specialized team.
