Rowell Brokaw Architects is designing the remodel of Churchill High School's former Industrial Arts building to house the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. With a recent Career and Technical Education Revitalization Grant of $425,000 from the State of Oregon, Eugene District 4J is now able to move forward with a goal to create a regional hub for STEM education that allows students to engage in engineering projects with working professionals. When completed, the remodeled building will be transformed into a vibrant environment that facilitates real world problem solving through creativity and technical knowledge.

The existing nondescript 11,500 sf building on the north side of the Churchill campus once housed a wood shop and an auto mechanics shop, but more recently has been home to Churchill Alternative High School, which has been relocated.

The newly refurbished space will feature large flexible engineering and technology classrooms, along with project workshop, storage, and demonstration areas. The spaces will allow community professionals and higher ed partners to directly engage STEM students through mentoring and projects. In addition, the building will also provide a new and enhanced space for the Rachel Carson Environmental Science Academy, which will relocate from the main school building.

The remodel will bring in natural light and ventilation, and will upgrade electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. A covered walkway will provide better connection to the main buildings. The facility will provide a bright new face to the Churchill High School campus.
